In 1956 there was a Popeye cartoon produced called “Popeye for President”. It depicted a duel between Popeye and his nemesis Bluto as they ran for president. Each one offered things like “free cigars if you vote for me”. Each one tried to outdo the other in offering free things for the voters. Why Free-to-start Business Opportunities Almost Always Fail
It seems like this scenario is repeated every election cycle in the United States.
And people love it. They think that not having to pay for things will make their lives easier and more enjoyable.
Likewise, many people who want to start a home business look for business ideas that are “free to start”.
Almost all of these people will fail. Why? Because they have no skin in the game. It doesn’t mean anything to them. They don’t start with a burning desire and a willingness to sacrifice for what they want.
In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill laid out a 6 step formula for success and riches.
The steps are:

Why Free-to-start Business Opportunities Almost Always Fail
1.    Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire.
2.    Determine what you intend to give in return for the money.
3.    Establish a date that you intend to possess the money you desire.
4.    Create a definite plan to carry out your desire and begin taking action.
5.    Write a statement defining the exact amount of money you desire, the time limit to acquire it, what you intend to give to get it and describe your plan.
6.    Read your statement aloud twice daily.
Hill is careful to explain that you never get something for nothing.
Raymond Charles Barker said, “There are people everywhere who have decided to expand their lives. These people are willing to be temporarily uncomfortable in order to achieve expanded consciousness and reach new goals.”
People who sacrifice something to get what they want tend to be the most successful people in the world.
I have a niece, Elise Wilding, who wanted to go to college but had absolutely zero money to do it and no real prospects of ways to get it. It was a burning desire. She wanted to have an education so she would not have to live on the edges of poverty the way she grew up. [mlsp-cta campaign=”sixfigurebizbuilder” layout=”standard” align=”left”]
She planned well ahead of time while she was in school to get outstanding grades so she would qualify for scholarships.
Elise studied and worked hard. She applied for all the scholarships she could find. Many of them didn’t even really apply to her but she applied anyway. She was bound and determined to get the education she needed.
In the end, she graduated from high school with high honors and received so many scholarships that she didn’t have to pay a dime out of pocket for her higher education.
She is now a successful artist and makes a tidy sum each year from art shows and commissions.

Her family has the things she did not have growing up.
She was willing to sacrifice her time and social life to have the comforts and reputation she now enjoys.
While money wasn’t her main focus, she knew that education would help her achieve it so that was her initial goal.
To continue to be successful, she works at her art daily and teaches, arranges to go to art shows and petitions for commission work. She doesn’t stop.
The people who are most successful in business, have a clear goal in mind and are willing to do what’s necessary to get to that goal.
Most people who want the “free-to-start” business models, have no idea that they will ultimately have to sacrifice something to really get the business they want.
They will have to invest both time and money into learning and putting their learned skills to work.
When it comes time to make the sacrifices most will drop out and call the opportunity a “scam” because they didn’t get something for free.
Likewise, some who start their businesses will fail because they wait for customers to magically appear. They don’t invest in advertising and customer service.
They have no real vision of what they want to achieve. There is a lack of burning desire and determination.
They have no real plan of action and don’t focus on their plan daily. Lack of the 6 steps is why free-to-start business opportunities almost always fail.
So be wary of something-for-free offers and know that it never really happens. There is no such thing as getting something for nothing.
“You don’t get something for nothing
You can’t have freedom for free
You won’t get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be” Neil Peart.

If you got some value please comment and share. Thanks.

Great post. There is definitely no business that is free that is worth doing. Business doesn’t work that way. You have to invest to build.

Nothing that is out there is free, never believed in those “free businesses”. People expect to make big money out of nothing. Thanks for this post Anita!

Thanks for that reminder of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich formula. I’ve used that formula to get where I’m at today with affiliate marketing (as the plan). It works.

People who want a business with no investment at all don’t even see the irony of their ways. They don’t want to spend money, how are they going to get customers (people who spend money)?
