You’ve just completed your new blog post. It’s truly a masterpiece.
Here are the steps you need to take to get your blog post seen by future adoring fans.
The first thing to do is to make sure you have a WordPress plugin called Yoast installed and activated.
Yoast is a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) plugin that helps sites like Google and Yahoo and other search engines find your blog post.
The plugin will help you optimize your post for SEO.
Once it is installed, scroll down from your post content that you have just created and look at the Yoast SEO Keywords.
There will be a list of items with dots beside them, red, green or orange.
This list will tell you how you can improve your document for SEO.
Be sure to add a Focus Key Word and make sure it appears in the snippet.
You’ll see where you can edit the snippet in the Yoast app, usually at the top.
For now, don’t put anything in the Meta Keywords spot. Yoast has a place where you can establish meta keywords for your blog that will apply to all your posts. If you have a post that is not compliant with your blog meta keywords, you can put the other meta keywords in this spot. Just leave it blank for now.
You’ll probably get something about using “stop words”. In computing, stop words are words which are filtered out before or after processing of natural language text. Search engines don’t like stop words. But I’ve always gotten a green light with Yoast ignoring this.
One thing that IS important are your key words. I’m not going to go into how you determine your best key words. That will take another blog post.
Just make sure your key words appear in your title and several times in your document, at least 3 times.[mlsp-cta campaign=”seomadman” popup=”false” layout=”standard” align=”left”]
Also, to get your green light, you’re going to have to have your key word in the description of your main image.
Make sure your main image is your “featured image”.
To add your key word to your featured image, click on it and put your key words in the box labeled “Alt Text”.
Adding outbound links inside your document will help SEO. Add a link directing people to your product or opportunity.
Use Headings and Sub Headings in your document. Highlight the text you want to become a heading and use the pull-down menu in your edit bar to specify “Paragraph” or “Heading 1 or 2 or 3, etc.”
Be sure to look at the other suggestions that Yoast offers such as document length, title, etc. and fix what needs to be fixed.
The second thing to look at is the Readability of your document.
Yoast will have some suggestions for you if you click on the tab marked “Readability”
Following these suggestions will make you a better blog writer.
I’ve tended to be wordy and use complex sentences. I’m getting more aware of making my documents simpler to read.
Once you’ve gotten two green lights, one for SEO and one for Readability, you’re ready to push “Publish”.
Now that it’s published, here are 5 ways to promote your new blog post.
That should get you up and running. Check out some of my other posts for more blogging tips.
