Abruptly Starting – The Best Way To Create A New Habit

Abruptly starting-The best way to create a new habit?

I read an article in the news that cited a study showing that people who wanted to quit smoking were more successful if they quit cold turkey.

Participants in the study set a date to quit and were prepared with counseling and medication to help them kick the habit.

Group A went cold turkey and group B tapered off.

But the study showed that the success rate for Group A was significantly better than group B.[mlsp-cta campaign=”profitwithppv” layout=”standard” align=”left”]

In talking about the study, Michael P. Eriksen, dean of the Georgia State University School of Public Health said, “There are two things that are important in quitting. One is confidence, belief in your ability to be successful. … And the second is desire, the commitment to do it.”

That’s all well and good for quitting a bad habit. What about the best way to create a new habit?

Let’s use the same school of thought.

You have a good habit you want to develop. Let’s say it’s something like getting up earlier in the morning.

Your current habit is getting up at about 10 am and staying up later at night in order to get things done.

It’s been proven that getting up earlier and going to bed earlier is more conducive to productivity and success. Billionaire Donald Trump is said to get up at 4 am every morning. I’d say he believes that philosophy.

So you decide you want to be more successful and changing your daily habits of waking and sleeping are some of the first things to fix.

If you were a “Group B” type of person, you’d gradually change your waking time until you reach your desired goal of getting up at 6 am every day.

If you’re in the “Group A” mode, you’d set your alarm on the day you decide to make the change and just start getting up at 6 am.

To prepare yourself, you’d read information on the benefits of early rising and talk to people who could support you in your goal for whichever group you are in.

Then on the day specified, let’s say it’s next Monday, you set your alarm.

The same two things in quitting smoking apply here, confidence in your ability to be successful and the desire and commitment to do it.

No matter what changes you want to make in your life, these two things apply.

Now that you know the secret, all you need is to make your list of lifestyle changes and tackle them one at a time.

It’ll be easy, right? Abruptly starting is the best way to create a new habit.

I absolutely agree! Just doing it and forming the habit becomes a success.

Starting a new habit is a challenge. Cold turkey is the best for me to stop something. 21 days in a row is the best for me to start something
