7 Keys to a successful content marketing strategy

In this post, I’m going to share with you what I’ve learned about content marketing and how to develop a strategy for success.

Why bother with a strategy? Well, there’s the old saying that failure to plan is planning to fail. It gets repeated for a reason. Of course, a strategy is a bit more than just a plan.

Here are some things to consider in developing your content marketing strategy.

How do you attract the right audience?

Former Tony Robbins marketing strategist, Pam Hendrickson says that you need to first define your niche and make it narrow. Make it as narrow as you can get it. She pointed out that the big guys we see out there all started small. Find a niche that is an under-served one and you’ve got a winner.

Do you have the chops to write your own content or do you need to hire a writer?

The whole idea of content marketing is to communicate with people. If you don’t communicate well, it will be difficult to get across what you wish to say. There are a number of places where you can hire writers. One of the cheapest is to go to fiverr.com. For $5 you can hire a writer for your content.

How do you get traffic once you have content on your blog?

This is a biggie. If you don’t get eyes to your content, you are dead in the water. There are a number of strategies for getting traffic to your blog, SEO, social media marketing, paid ads, etc.

For the purpose of this blog, I won’t go into details on these since each is a topic in itself.

So what are the 7 keys to a successful content marketing strategy?

  1. Look at other blogs and figure out how you can stand out from the crowd. What unique information is missing from what’s out there? How can you help people accomplish something? What problems can you help them solve?
  2. Do your blog posts actually give specific information to solve problems or are they just general advice? People come back to blogs that actually provide help. Do you post enough helpful information without withholding critical information that you want to sell?
  3. Strive to have a personal relationship with your audience. Reply to comments and make it easy for them to contact you. Reply to emails and follow up. Having associated social media sites is a great idea. People are comfortable posting queries on Facebook or Twitter. Use them to connect with your blog readers. You can build a blog audience by connecting with social media. I’ll have later posts to show you just how to do that.
  4. Are you actually doing what you say to do on your blog? Becoming an authority in your niche means that you have experience doing what you blog about.
  5. Be transparent and open with your readers. If you are starting a new campaign, let them know what you’re doing so they can learn from your experience. Tell them what you are learning as you go. Even if you are a “newbie” (I really hate that term), you can gain followers who are at the same point you are because you are actually doing something.
  6. Put your reader’s needs at the top of your list. Help them achieve the next level. Show them how to do things. Get them thinking about things that might not have occurred to them. Go deep. Walk in their shoes.
  7. Give them a cure to their pain. What are their struggles? What can you do to help them?

These are the 7 keys to a successful content marketing strategy. This really isn’t rocket science but there are so many bloggers who struggle because they fail in one or more of these areas.

In future episodes, I’m going to tell you the steps you need to take to use Facebook to flood your blog with readers. See you then.
